BOD5 testing is commonly used, but still has many drawbacks. For example, the long lead time (5 days) before results are available can lead to environmental damage before the data is available. Testing is time-consuming and expensive. It is imprecise and has a high minimum detection limit, so it is not suitable for clean/uncontaminated river samples. Accuracy/reproducibility is low and this is a laboratory measurement only and does not address all potential problems during sampling and transport.
Therefore, moving from traditional laboratory testing to real-time monitoring in the field will help alleviate most of these problems.
