BOD5 testing is commonly used, but still has many drawbacks. For example, the long lead time (5 days) before results are available can lead to environmental damage before the data is available. Testing is time-consuming and expensive. It is imprecise and has a high minimum detection limit, so it is not suitable for clean/uncontaminated river samples. Accuracy/reproducibility is low and this is a laboratory measurement only and does not address all potential problems during sampling and transport.

Main Components

• UV light source: used to emit UV light of a specific wavelength.
• Optical system: used to irradiate UV light onto the water sample and collect the UV light transmitted through the water sample.
• Detector: Used to detect the intensity of the UV light transmitted through the water sample.
• Signal Processing System: Used to amplify, process and convert the detector signal into BOD value.

Measurement process

• The water sample to be measured is added to the BOD sensor measurement cell.
• The UV light source emits UV light of a specific wavelength.
• The UV light hits the water sample and is partially absorbed by the organic matter in the water sample.
• The UV light transmitted through the water sample is received by a detector.
• The signal processing system amplifies, processes and converts the detector signal into a BOD value, which is displayed on the instrument screen.
