Why the WWTPs Needed Faster Monitoring?
Two wastewater treatment projects in Jinan and Shiyan faced a similar operational problem: laboratory and manual testing required approximately 4–6 hours, while wastewater conditions could change much faster.
At the Jinan plant, high turbidity caused conventional sensor deviation of more than 20%, while monitoring data were disconnected from the control system.
At the Shiyan plant, fluctuating water quality and interference from treatment chemicals made timely process decisions difficult.
Both projects therefore required an online wastewater monitoring approach that could provide continuous multiparameter data directly to plant operators.
Multiparameter Monitoring with Intelligent Data Processing
Both projects adopted spectral multiparameter monitoring combined with intelligent terminals and remote data transmission.
In Jinan, the system monitored 12 parameters, including COD and sludge concentration. A reagent-free design with automatic cleaning was selected for complex wastewater conditions, while an anti-turbidity algorithm was used to reduce measurement drift. The project record reports algorithm accuracy above 98%.
In Shiyan, the monitoring system continuously measured more than ten indicators, including COD, TOC and ammonia nitrogen. Intelligent algorithms were used to reduce interference, while mobile monitoring provided real-time data and abnormal-condition alarms.
The basic operating model was:
Online sensors → algorithm processing → intelligent terminal → central control → process adjustment
Project Results
At Jinan, continuous monitoring replaced long data delays with real-time transmission to the central control room, giving operators more reliable information for process adjustment.
At Shiyan, the project reported second-level monitoring and minute-level abnormal response. The reagent-free monitoring arrangement reduced O&M cost by 70%, while labor cost decreased by 30%. The project record also reports 100% compliant effluent during the reported operating period.
