Project Background
A city sports center operates a large public swimming pool with a total water area of approximately 1,200 m², including a competition pool, training pool, and children’s wading pool. The venue receives over 500 swimmers per day, with peak summer traffic exceeding 800 visitors per day.
Previously, the pool relied on manual water testing, which caused delays, dosing errors, unstable residual chlorine and pH control, and incomplete data records. To improve water safety, operating efficiency, and compliance management, the customer needed an intelligent water quality system integrating real-time monitoring, automatic dosing, remote management, and data traceability.
Project Requirements
According to the operational needs of the swimming pool, the project focused on building an online monitoring and automatic control system for the pool circulation water system. The main requirements included:
The system needed to monitor residual chlorine, pH, ORP, turbidity, and water temperature simultaneously.
- 24-hour continuous monitoring
The equipment needed to operate continuously and update data at least once every 10 seconds to detect water quality changes in time.
- Automatic dosing control
When pH, residual chlorine, or other indicators exceeded the set range, the system needed to automatically control chemical dosing pumps for acid/alkali adjustment, disinfection, coagulation, and other dosing processes.
- Remote management and alarm notification
Operators needed to view real-time data, historical curves, and alarm information through a computer cloud platform or mobile app.
- Data storage and compliance traceability
The system needed to automatically store historical water quality data and support data export and printing for inspection and compliance management.
Solution Design
The project adopted the APURE KS-400/600 rack-mounted five-parameter water quality analyzer as the core monitoring device, together with intelligent chemical dosing metering pumps, to build a closed-loop pool water management system covering monitoring, control, dosing, and feedback.
System Process
Based on the system diagram, the pool circulation water process is as follows:
Swimming Pool / Water Attraction → Balance Tank / Surge Tank → Circulation Pump → Hair & Lint Strainer → Sand Filter / Media Filter → Disinfection / Conditioning Section → Online Monitoring & Dosing Point → Return Inlets
Pool water is collected from skimmers, overflow gutters, and the main drain, then enters the circulation system. After filtration, disinfection, monitoring, and chemical adjustment, the treated water is returned to the pool through return inlets. The make-up water system compensates for evaporation and splash-out losses, while the backwash/drain line is used for filter cleaning and wastewater discharge.
Online Monitoring Configuration
The system monitors key parameters in the circulation pipeline:
| Parameter | Function |
| pH | Controls acid-base balance and supports effective disinfection |
| Free Chlorine / Residual Chlorine | Ensures sufficient disinfectant concentration |
| ORP | Reflects oxidation-reduction potential and disinfection status |
| Temperature | Monitors water comfort and water quality variation factors |
| Flow | Monitors circulation system operating status |
| Turbidity | Evaluates filtration performance and suspended solids control |
Chemical Dosing Configuration
The chemical dosing unit includes:
| Dosing Item | Main Function |
| pH Adjuster | Adjusts acid-base balance |
| Disinfectant | Adds sodium hypochlorite or chlorine-based chemicals |
| Flocculant / Coagulant | Helps remove suspended solids and improve filtration |
| Algaecide | Controls algae growth and keeps water clear |
When online monitoring data exceeds the preset range, the system automatically sends control signals to the dosing pumps, achieving accurate chemical dosing and reducing manual dosing errors.
System Architecture
The solution uses a four-layer architecture:
| Layer | Function |
| Sensing Layer | APURE sensors collect real-time data for pH, residual chlorine, ORP, turbidity, temperature, and other parameters |
| Transmission Layer | Supports RS485 Modbus-RTU and 4G wireless transmission for stable data upload |
| Platform Layer | Cloud platform provides data storage, trend analysis, alarm management, and remote viewing |
| Execution Layer | Links with dosing pumps and the circulation filtration system for automatic water quality adjustment |
Project Results
After six months of operation, the swimming pool achieved a significant improvement in water quality management.
Water Quality Compliance Rate Increased Significantly
The APURE online water quality analyzer provided 24-hour continuous monitoring and reduced blind spots caused by manual testing. The compliance rate of the five core indicators increased from 85% to 99.5%, and fluctuations in residual chlorine and pH were controlled within the middle range of the standard threshold.
Chemical and Labor Costs Were Reduced
The intelligent dosing system enabled data-driven chemical dosing, avoiding excessive or delayed manual dosing. Chemical consumption was reduced by approximately 20%, saving around RMB 36,000 per year in chemical costs. Remote management also reduced the need for 24-hour manual monitoring, saving around RMB 60,000 per year in labor costs.
Swimmer Experience Improved
With more stable water quality, complaints related to skin irritation and respiratory discomfort dropped from 5–8 cases per month to zero. The venue also installed a water quality display screen at the entrance to show real-time data monitored by the APURE system, improving swimmer confidence and the venue’s brand image.
Management Efficiency Improved
Maintenance staff can now view real-time water quality data and historical curves for all three pools through a mobile app. When abnormal conditions occur, the system sends notifications to mobile devices, allowing remote response without constant on-site supervision. Management efficiency improved by more than 50%.
