The Challenge: Monitoring a Large Marine Ranch

Large marine ranches face water quality risks that periodic manual inspection cannot reliably capture. Seasonal oxygen depletion, algal blooms and temperature fluctuations may develop between inspection rounds, leaving operators with limited time to respond.

At a marine ranch in Weihai, Shandong, the monitoring area included extensive offshore aquaculture facilities. The project needed continuous data across multiple locations rather than relying on individual sampling points.

The objective was to connect water quality monitoring with practical farm decisions:

Distributed Monitoring → Early Warning → Aeration & Feeding Response

Distributed Monitoring: Fixed Stations, Buoys and Mobile Platforms

APURE deployed an integrated monitoring architecture combining three types of monitoring nodes.

Monitoring nodeDeployment and purpose
Fixed monitoring stationsInstalled along the aquaculture shoreline to continuously monitor discharge outlets and nearby waters
Solar-powered monitoring buoysDeployed in core aquaculture areas, transmitting data every 15 minutes
Mobile monitoring platformUsed for periodic unmanned-vessel inspections, including areas outside fixed-station coverage

The fixed stations monitored pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen and turbidity. Offshore buoys added temperature, salinity and chlorophyll-a, supporting the detection of oxygen depletion and changing algal conditions.

The system also incorporated anti-fouling sensor protection and self-cleaning mechanisms to reduce biological attachment during long-term marine deployment.

For remote operation, the buoys used hybrid solar and battery power, with BeiDou satellite communication supporting data transmission from offshore locations.

From Water Quality Data to Farm Decisions

The monitoring system did more than display readings. Data from the distributed nodes was consolidated on a cloud platform, where abnormal conditions could trigger SMS, mobile-app and audible alerts.

The project also incorporated trend-based dissolved oxygen warnings and linkage with aeration equipment.

This allowed operators to use continuous measurements to support two important decisions:

Aeration: Detect developing low-DO conditions and activate aeration before oxygen depletion causes major production losses.

Feeding: Use chlorophyll-a trends and other water quality information to adjust feeding strategies rather than relying entirely on fixed schedules or operator experience.

The operational chain was:

Water Quality Change → Remote Detection → Automatic Warning → Aeration / Feeding Adjustment → Reduced Aquaculture Risk

Project Results

According to the Weihai marine ranch project records, the monitoring system delivered the following results:

+15%

Aquaculture Survival Rate

Reported improvement supported by earlier warnings and timely farm management.

−40%

Operation & Maintenance Costs

The system replaced approximately 80% of manual inspection work.

≈ RMB 250,000

Annual Electricity Savings

Reported savings from more targeted aeration.

+20%

Feed Utilization

Reported improvement from data-supported feeding decisions.

Beyond the operational results, continuous monitoring records provided environmental management data and helped the farm move from experience-based inspection toward data-driven operation.

The project demonstrates the value of monitoring an entire aquaculture area as a connected system—not simply installing isolated sensors at individual locations.
